We are seeking an Automotive Technician – Instructional Assistant.

Summary: This position entails assisting the instructor with general classroom operations, supervising student work crews, and performing various related duties as assigned by the instructor and/or administration. Non-instructional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with material development, clerical tasks, equipment maintenance, disciplinary actions, and other related activities.

Instruction

  • Under the guidance of the instructor, prepare for daily instruction by gathering, copying, and organizing materials and equipment required for class.
  • Support students who may struggle with understanding or keeping pace with the initial instruction provided by the instructor.
  • Facilitate follow-up activities by working with individuals or small groups, as directed by the instructor.
  • Provide repeated instruction for students who were absent during the original presentation.
  • Assist in the preparation of daily instructional activities, classroom arrangements, and specialized instructional unit materials.

Management and Supervision

  • Oversee student groups or individual learners.
  • Proctor examinations.
  • Monitor students engaged in desk-bound study and activities assigned by the instructor.
  • Maintain and enforce both Career Center and program behavior standards, referring violators to the instructor and appropriate administrators as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the instructor on program goals, needs, and instructional strategies.
  • Utilize the counselor as a resource, with the instructor’s approval, to assist students in achieving desired behavioral changes.

Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate records of student grades and daily attendance using instructor-developed record-keeping systems.
  • Discuss observed student skills and activities with the instructor in relation to completing competency profiles.
  • Score daily work and assessments based on instructor-provided keys and standards.
  • Coordinate with the instructor regarding the requisition of supplies and equipment for the program.
  • Monitor students and maintain accurate records of daily receipts and customer bills.
  • Prepare handouts, teaching materials, and inventory copies.

Safety

  • Report any accidents, unsafe conditions, or hazards to the instructor and/or administration.
  • Adhere to established safety practices and procedures to ensure a safe classroom environment.

Maintenance and Repair

  • Conduct general housekeeping and minor repairs of equipment.
  • Assist the instructor in major overhauls of machinery and equipment.

Equipment and Supply Inventory

  • Collaborate with the instructor to complete inventory checks.
  • Assume the role of instructor as needed.
  • Participate in open house events, conferences, and other school-sponsored activities as required.
  • Perform various other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required; an associate’s degree is preferred. Candidates must possess at least two years (4,000 hours) of relevant paid work experience in the automotive industry within the last five years. Evidence of this experience must be included with the application. Previous experience working with youth is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
Upon hiring, the employee must obtain and pay for an Annual Authorization Permit for substitute instructor duties. A valid Michigan driver’s license with no more than 6 points is required. Michigan certifications in Brakes and Braking Systems and Front End Suspension and Steering Systems are mandatory. Michigan Mechanic Master Certified Automobile and Light Truck certification is preferred, and all Michigan certifications must be maintained.

Employment Date, Salary, and Fringe Benefits:
The anticipated employment date is August 18, 2025. Salary placement on the Instructional Assistant salary schedule will depend on qualifications and experience, with the starting hourly pay range of $19.44 – $29.09.
