Job description:

We are seeking a qualified candidate for a part-time Cook position at the Detroit Institute of Arts, located at 5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202. Please note that applications are only accepted online.

The Cook will work a full-time schedule from Tuesday to Sunday, with varying hours, to be discussed further during the interview process. Previous culinary experience is preferred for this role.

Job Summary:
The Cook is responsible for preparing food in compliance with federal, state, and corporate standards, ensuring that quality food service is maintained at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare high-quality food items according to standardized recipes to meet production, delivery, and service schedules.
  • Serve meals or prepare them for delivery by adhering to proper portioning, ensuring food is served at the correct temperature and presented attractively.
  • Follow established procedures for ticket collection and maintain accurate records during service.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen post-preparation and ensure that excess food is stored or discarded according to safe handling practices.
  • Ensure refrigerators and storerooms are kept clean and organized, with food items stored according to standards.
  • Operate and maintain kitchen equipment as directed.
  • Assist with production planning and maintain necessary records and reports.
  • Participate in ordering and receiving food and supplies as needed.
  • Report maintenance needs, equipment malfunctions, or accidents to a supervisor immediately.
  • Attend in-service and safety meetings.
  • Cultivate positive working relationships with coworkers, customers, administrators, and managers.
  • Adhere to safety protocols while maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Perform supplementary duties as assigned.
  • Ensure appropriate presentation, portion control, and maintenance of serving temperatures, following HACCP standards.
  • Commit to personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including the use of:

    • Medium weight cut gloves for handling knives and sharp tools.
    • Oven mitts, fryer gloves, or steamer gloves when handling hot items.
    • Slip-resistant shoes and proper lifting techniques.
