Job description:
The Public Safety Service Officer is tasked with various responsibilities crucial to the effective operation of municipal public safety services. This role involves receiving, transmitting, and logging messages through a radio communications system, assisting police officers and fire department personnel as needed, and executing additional functions pertinent to departmental operations. The officer operates under the general supervision of the on-duty shift commander within the Patrol Division and exercises independent judgment to dispatch personnel in response to service requests and emergencies.
Key responsibilities include answering 911 and non-emergency calls, assisting police officers in managing individuals in custody, and processing arrestees.
Duties include:
- Receiving and transmitting radio communications to public safety personnel.
- Maintaining an accurate log of messages received or sent.
- Operating LEIN machines and computer terminals.
- Keeping records and preparing reports.
- Executing jail attendant duties, which involve searching prisoners, taking fingerprints and mug shots, and processing court paperwork.
- Assisting in the physical management of individuals in custody when necessary.
- Engaging in front desk operations, animal control, and traffic control as needed.
- Answering all department phone calls, including emergency 911 calls for police and fire services.
- Performing other assigned duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated physical stamina and endurance to manage physical situations effectively and assist with restraining individuals in custody.
- Proficiency in typing at least 40 words per minute.
- Ability to remain composed while acting swiftly and effectively during emergencies.
- Competence in operating necessary office equipment, including the LEIN Terminal.
- Capacity to maintain precise records and prepare required reports.
- Strong auditory comprehension and clear communication skills under stressful conditions with multiple conversations occurring.
- Quick adaptability in mastering job duties as well as relevant regulations, policies, and procedures.
