Job description:

We are excited to announce an exceptional opportunity for a driven and achievement-oriented individual to join our expanding team in Detroit, MI. Brown and Caldwell is seeking a Research Engineer with a robust technical background in chemical and biological treatment processes. The successful candidate will support client-focused solids and energy pilot research projects while collaborating nationally and globally with BC’s research and innovation teams to evaluate technologies and methodologies for a diverse range of clients across BC’s service sectors and geographic locations.

This position entails providing support across various treatment planning and evaluation projects while aiding process engineering teams to enhance project design, implement technological innovations, and optimize operations. Responsibilities will include the coordination and management of research projects, with a technical emphasis on process evaluation, bench and pilot testing, modeling, and participating in the design development of water, wastewater, advanced treatment, and water recycling projects. Specific duties will encompass the following:

  • Leading the development and management of research and solids and energy studies essential for informing process design across all of BC’s practice areas.
  • Maintaining industry connectivity to track the current landscape and inform internal strategies for go-to-market approaches.
  • Developing and overseeing the implementation of work plans focused on solids and energy processes.
  • Creating innovative strategies and recommendations for integrating BC research and innovation into project planning and execution by facilitating coordination among the treatability laboratory and research program delivery, aligned with BC’s technical priorities.
  • Ensuring quality assurance and quality control for experimental projects.
  • Collaborating with engineering disciplines, departments, and other offices to cultivate a seamless approach to leveraging BC’s treatability laboratory resources and strategic partnerships.
  • Preparing research and engineering reports, technical memoranda, and other related documentation.
  • Actively engaging with clients to cultivate new work opportunities.
  • Understanding regulatory compliance and permitting requirements.
  • Contributing to professional publications in peer-reviewed journals and participating in relevant associations.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of a Ph.D. in civil or environmental engineering, with a focus on solids and energy, particularly anaerobic digestion.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in water treatment testing.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record in publishing peer-reviewed research.
  • The ability to work effectively within a diverse team environment.

Compensation and Benefits:

The anticipated starting salary for this position will vary based on the employee’s primary work location and relevant skills, experience, and education, with salary ranges being subject to modification over time.
