This position is situated within the Nutrition and Food Service at the Chillicothe, Ohio VA Medical Center. The primary responsibility of the Cook is to prepare nutritious, high-quality meals for Veterans. Overview

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities for the Cook position include, but are not limited to:
- Independently preparing and cooking a variety of meals, including regular and therapeutic diets such as diabetic, low sodium, low protein, and gluten-free options, as well as desserts.
- Adhering to menus, production sheets, and recipes to ensure items are prepared in the necessary quantities.
- Grilling, broiling, baking, and preparing cold sandwich fillings and a variety of sandwiches.
- Utilizing various cooking methods for meats, fish, and poultry, including broiling, roasting, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, and braising.
- Hand-slicing meat items to meet size and weight specifications.
- Preparing fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables, and baking items like frozen potatoes and pre-made doughs.
- Heating convenience items and modifying pureed foods as needed.
- Washing, peeling, and chopping fruits and vegetables, and mixing salad and dessert components.
- Planning cooking processes to ensure meals are delivered on time and at the correct temperature, coordinating items with varying cooking times.
- Creating various desserts, including cobblers, brownies, cookies, and pastries.
- Weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients for standard and modified diets.
- Operating kitchen equipment safely and adhering to sanitation protocols.
- Cleaning, sanitizing work areas, and performing deep cleaning tasks when required.
- Operating the industrial dish machine and undertaking other related duties as necessary.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time position with work hours from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday.
