Job description:

Under general supervision, the Manager Trainee will be responsible for acquiring comprehensive knowledge in managing a small driver count and/or non-traditional shifts, including nights and weekends. This role focuses on ensuring the safe and timely movement of freight, overseeing load assignments, and delivering exceptional customer service. The individual will undergo training to ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and will be accountable for driver compliance as well as adherence to company regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with drivers and outside carriers to facilitate seamless carrier onboarding, reduce turnover, and enhance overall productivity.
  • Provide support in the absence of team members and contribute to special projects aimed at optimizing fleet operations and improving profitability.
  • Acquire skills in personnel management, including training and orienting drivers and employees, and assisting with internal and third-party systems.
  • Gain proficiency in maximizing fleet operational efficiency and profitability by making recommendations for continuous improvement, measuring key performance indicators, and preparing customer-specific financial analyses through direct interactions at customer locations.
  • Acquire knowledge in managing inventory, assets, customer pools, and the assignment of drivers to ensure balanced equipment allocation in the market.
  • Undertake administrative duties, including payroll management, overseeing the net-revenue budget, driver counseling, conducting accident reviews, maintaining documentation, resolving pay issues, and analyzing profit and loss statements.
  • Learn to manage yard operations, including inspecting equipment, performing repairs, and coordinating with maintenance to ensure timely completion of preventive maintenance and resolution of safety-related mechanical issues.
  • Collaborate with drivers, customers, and company personnel to address service issues, routing/planning challenges, mechanical problems, and accessorial pay matters as they arise, including out-of-hours support when necessary.
  • Uphold the company’s safety culture by delivering daily safety messages to drivers, conducting monthly safety briefings, facilitating quarterly training, and enforcing policies to meet DOT compliance and safety requirements.
  • Plan, route, and monitor freight movement to ensure safe, on-time service that meets customer demands, including managing freight exceptions and adjusting driver estimated times of arrival based on various factors.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED, with up to four years of relevant experience and training; currently enrolled in a degree program, with up to two years of equivalent experience; or a Bachelor’s degree with flexibility to work across multiple shifts, including nights or weekends as required. Willingness to travel to various locations is essential.

Compensation:
Starting pay may be influenced by skills, education, experience, location, and other qualifications of the successful candidate. This role may also be eligible for annual bonuses and incentives based on profitability or volumes per the company’s incentive plans.
