Position Summary:
Under the guidance of the Airport Manager, the Airport Worker will be tasked with delivering exceptional customer service to aircraft personnel and passengers. Responsibilities include fueling aircraft and maintaining airport facilities and equipment. The role requires availability on an on-call basis for snow removal and to cover vacations as needed.

Pay Rate Information:
The Airport Worker position is non-union with a starting pay of $17.87 per hour. Eligible candidates can receive step pay increases, with the top end of the wage scale reaching $22.63 per hour.

Essential Job Functions:
The individual in this position may be required to perform a range of essential functions, including but not limited to:

  • Conducting inspections, maintenance, and repairs on airport facilities, buildings, grounds, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Operating fueling trucks and stationary fueling equipment; ensuring clean fuel delivery to aircraft by conducting regular monitoring and testing.
  • Performing daily inspections and quality control on fueling equipment.
  • Providing radio communications and general support to airport customers.
  • Utilizing aircraft towing equipment to move aircraft as necessary.
  • Opening and closing the terminal building, encompassing inspections of buildings, grounds, parking ramps, and security.
  • Mowing lawns and executing snow removal operations on airport grounds.
  • Issuing advisories to airmen regarding critical items such as runway snow or ongoing airport construction.
  • Assisting customers with rental car arrangements, catering, and hotel accommodations.
  • Processing payments for goods and services rendered.
  • Offering 24-hour service to aircraft and airport facilities as required.
  • Performing other duties as directed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements include:

  • A high school diploma or GED and a minimum of one year of progressively responsible experience in grounds and maintenance.
  • Consideration of alternative combinations of formal education and work experience may be taken at the County’s discretion.
  • A valid Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • A solid understanding of airport maintenance principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in a variety of maintenance activities related to airport facilities, including snow removal, fueling various aircraft, ensuring a clean fuel supply, and fulfilling customer service needs of aircraft personnel and passengers.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and report preparation.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Capacity to establish productive working relationships and exhibit sound judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when interacting with County employees, contractors, other governmental representatives, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public.
  • Ability to assess situations, troubleshoot effectively, and work efficiently under stress and tight deadlines, including during emergencies.
  • Competence in using office equipment and technology, particularly Microsoft Suite applications.
  • Proficiency in operating specialized airport equipment such as fuel trucks, lawn maintenance and snow removal machinery, aircraft tugs, and ground power units for aircraft.
