Position Purpose:
Food and food service delivery drivers play a vital role in the nation’s food supply chain. Our drivers ensure that customers’ products are delivered on time and in excellent condition, while also representing our company and fostering enduring customer relationships.
The driver is responsible for operating a tractor trailer or straight truck on both intrastate and interstate routes, including local deliveries, over-the-road transport, shuttle services, and overnight drive and drop routes. This role involves delivering and unloading food and related products to customers safely and punctually, in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Primary Responsibilities:
– Maintain professional communication and interactions with customers, vendors, and co-workers to ensure timely and accurate responses to inquiries.
– Function effectively as a team member within the department and across the organization, fulfilling any assigned duties to best serve the company.
– Conduct all required safety checks (e.g., pre/post trip) and inspections of the tractor/truck and trailer in accordance with DOT regulations, ensuring compliance with company safety standards and addressing any issues promptly.
– Report all safety concerns and necessary repairs.
– Adhere to all DOT regulations and company driving guidelines and policies.
– Promptly report any safety hazards, inspecting the trailer for secure and properly loaded freight.
– Perform a count check of items and verify customer invoices for loaded products.
– Accurately complete all required paperwork associated with freight in a legible manner.
– Maneuver the tractor to the loading dock and attach preloaded trailers as necessary.
– Deliver customer orders according to the established route and schedule.
– Unload products from the trailer and transport them to designated customer storage areas.
– Conduct damage control checks on items, scan, and communicate with the supervisor regarding the removal of orders as per company policy.
– Confirm delivery of items with customers and obtain required signatures.
– Collect payment (cash or checks) as needed, and secure customer returns in the trailer.
– Ensure that the tractor, trailer, and freight are securely locked at all times.
– Unload damaged goods and customer returns, submitting necessary paperwork and removing trash from trailers as needed.
– Maintain daily records of hours of service and log entries in compliance with federal, state, and company regulations.
– Perform general housekeeping duties in the tractor, loading dock area, and keep trailers clean and orderly as required.
– At the end of the shift, secure all equipment and complete all necessary documentation.
– Execute other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
– At least 12 months of commercial driving experience
– High school diploma/GED or state-approved equivalent
– Valid CDL A
– Compliance with all state licensing and certification requirements (where applicable)
– Must be at least 21 years of age
– Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the past three years
– Ability to pass a post-offer drug test and criminal background check
– Successful completion of a road test
– Valid current DOT Health Card or ability to obtain a new one
– Capability to lift and utilize equipment such as a two-wheeler and lift gate to move and stack product cases or freight of varying sizes and weights, generally ranging from 10 to 35 pounds, and up to approximately 60 to 90 pounds depending on the location.
Preferred Qualifications:
– Six months of route delivery experience using a ramp and dolly
– Experience with onboard computer and electronic log systems (e.g., PeopleNet)
– Familiarity with handheld point of delivery scanning systems (e.g., POD)
– Background in customer service-related roles
