Role of a Direct Support Professional (DSP)

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at Beacon, you will play a vital role in assisting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, and mental health challenges. Your contributions will be essential in helping residents achieve personal goals, fostering independence, and enhancing their overall quality of life.

Daily Responsibilities Include:

  • Support and Care: Encourage and guide individuals daily to achieve their goals, adhering to personalized behavior plans.
  • Foster a Safe Environment: Create a trusting atmosphere where individuals feel secure, valued, and respected, ensuring their rights are upheld.
  • Meal Preparation and Housekeeping: Prepare meals according to dietary requirements and assist with laundry and cleaning tasks to maintain a safe and organized living environment.
  • Transportation and Advocacy: Provide transportation to appointments, advocate on behalf of individuals, and assist with necessary documentation.
  • Medication Administration: Administer medications as prescribed, ensuring accurate dosages are provided.
  • 24/7 Availability: Be prepared to remain awake and accessible in homes that require round-the-clock support.
  • Supervise Daily Activities: Assist individuals with personal care, daily life skills, and social activities.

Qualifications:

  • Required:

    • High school diploma or GED preferred.
    • Must be 18 years of age or older.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Compassionate and patient demeanor when working with individuals facing mental health challenges.
  • Preferred:
    • 1-2 years of experience in healthcare, social services, or a related field (experience is not required).
    • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
    • Ability to navigate environments that may pose risks, including potential exposure to physical aggression and infectious diseases.
