Job description:

Plan and coordinate all religious programming within a multi-level correctional facility, encompassing service scheduling and oversight; volunteer recruitment, training, and management; planning and facilitating religious special events; providing pastoral counseling; overseeing religious purchases and orders; identifying appropriate religious vendors; and serving as a religious resource for staff. This position entails regular unsupervised access to and direct interaction with prisoners, probationers, or parolees.

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in religion, theology, divinity, or a related field in human services, such as guidance and counseling, social work, or criminal justice is required.

Candidates should have a minimum of three years of professional experience as a religious leader, either in a community or institutional setting, equivalent to the role of an Institution Chaplain, including one year at a level equivalent to Institution Chaplain P11.

An alternate pathway for consideration includes possession of an associate’s degree in religious studies or a related area in human services, combined with two years (4,160 hours) of experience performing religious services, such as marriages, burials, baptisms, and other faith-specific ceremonies, which may substitute for the educational requirement.

Certification or endorsement from a recognized body affiliated with the relevant religious faith is a prerequisite. Specific positions may necessitate consideration of only candidates with credentials in a particular religious tradition. In accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996, the Department of Corrections will not employ individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have pending felony charges.
