Job description:
The primary objective of the school social worker is to support students encountering emotional and social challenges that hinder their ability to fully benefit from the educational program. This role entails serving as a liaison among parents/guardians, the school, and public or private agencies involved in student care and services, thereby assisting parents in accessing available resources within the school and community. Additionally, the social worker will mentor less experienced colleagues and participate on the crisis response team to offer support to other schools during significant crisis incidents.
Key responsibilities related to providing services for students eligible for special education due to emotional or social issues include:
– Conducting social work evaluations for students suspected of having emotional or behavioral problems that may qualify them for special education services.
– Participating in Multi-Disciplinary team meetings to review evaluation outcomes and make recommendations concerning eligibility.
– Engaging in Individual Educational Planning (IEP) meetings to assess the level of social work support required by students, and to develop annual goals and short-term instructional objectives addressing the social and emotional needs of eligible students.
– Delivering social work services in accordance with IEPs, associated goals, and objectives while providing written evaluations regarding student progress.
– Conducting functional behavior assessments and collaborating with IEP team members to create behavior intervention plans.
– Providing training to staff and assisting them in implementing behavior intervention strategies.
– Maintaining accurate and confidential records for each student served.
– Collaborating with general education and collaborative teachers to design activities that facilitate the inclusion of special education students with behavioral challenges in mainstream classrooms.
– Mentoring social workers who are in their initial years of employment and are seeking temporary approval as school social workers.
– Offering pre-referral consultations to educators and school leaders concerning students exhibiting behavioral or adjustment issues, and participating in the child study team for referred students.
– Consulting with parents/guardians about family and community adjustment, as well as guiding them in utilizing community resources.
– Providing training and support to teachers on classroom management strategies to better address student behavior.
– Acting as a liaison between the school and community service organizations.
– Conducting home visits for family consultations and evaluations.
– Assisting school teams in formulating and executing crisis response plans.
– Aiding staff and parents in coping with crises or trauma and contributing to the crisis, trauma, and loss response teams addressing major incidents.

Qualifications for this position include:
