Description:
The primary responsibility of the School Social Worker is to support students whose emotional and social challenges hinder their ability to maximize the benefits of their educational experience. This role also involves acting as a liaison among parents/guardians, the school, and public and private agencies dedicated to student care and services, thereby assisting families in accessing available resources within the school and community. The School Social Worker will serve as a mentor to less experienced colleagues and participate on the crisis response team to provide support to other schools during critical incidents.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct social work evaluations for students identified as having emotional or behavioral concerns that may qualify them for special education services.
  • Participate in Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings to review evaluation outcomes and provide recommendations regarding eligibility.
  • Engage in Individual Educational Planning (IEP) meetings to assess the level of social work support needed and to establish annual goals and short-term objectives tailored to the social and emotional needs of students.
  • Deliver social work services as outlined in IEPs in relation to specified goals and objectives; provide written assessments concerning student progress.
  • Conduct functional behavior assessments and collaborate with IEP team members to create behavior intervention plans.
  • Provide staff training and support for the implementation of behavior intervention plans.
  • Maintain up-to-date and confidential records for each student served.
  • Collaborate with general education and special education teachers to design activities that promote the inclusion of special education students experiencing behavioral challenges in mainstream classrooms.
  • Mentor other social workers who are in the process of obtaining temporary approval as school social workers during their initial years of employment.
  • Offer pre-referral consultation to teachers and school leaders regarding students exhibiting behavior and adjustment challenges, and participate in child study teams for students referred for interventions.
  • Consult with parents and guardians concerning family dynamics, community integration, and the utilization of local resources.
  • Train and assist teachers in effective classroom management strategies to address student behavior issues more effectively.
  • Act as a liaison between the school and community service agencies.
  • Conduct home visits for family consultations and evaluations.
  • Support school teams in developing and implementing crisis response plans.
  • Aid staff and parents in navigating crises and trauma situations, and contribute to our crisis, trauma, and loss response teams to address significant incidents.
  • Assist the school team in creating and executing school-wide behavior intervention strategies, including training on Conflict Prevention and Intervention techniques to enhance staff capabilities in addressing problem areas.
  • Facilitate social skills training for students as part of comprehensive school-wide behavior intervention strategies.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in social work and licensure/certification with a School Social Worker endorsement or eligibility for temporary or full approval as a school social worker.
  • A minimum of two years of successful experience in school social work.
  • Proficiency in individual and group assessment and therapeutic techniques gained through practical experience.
  • Competence in formulating eligibility recommendations for students with emotional or social difficulties.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
