The Opportunity
Our Columbus, OH location currently seeks a Transportation Operations Supervisor.
Scope: This role necessitates leadership experience in personnel management. You will oversee the planning of approximately 60,000 truckloads, 100,000 less-than-truckload shipments, and 2.3 million parcel deliveries, accounting for approximately $2.9 billion in revenue. The annual spending for this area ranges from $60 to $80 million, with a supplier base comprising 50 truckload carriers, 17 less-than-truckload carriers, and one parcel carrier. The position will support multiple plants and distribution centers while interacting with Transportation Management Systems. Some travel (approximately 5%) may be required for customer and carrier visits.
Primary Functions/Objectives: This role supports and enhances transportation supply chain processes, aligning with customer expectations and Abbott Nutrition Supply Chain objectives. You will manage the Transportation Planners on the U.S. Transportation Operations Team, ensuring effective execution of Freight to Customer (FTC), Internal Deployment (ITD), Inbound Finished Goods (IBFG), International Drayage, and Inbound Raw Materials (IBRM). Responsibilities include planning freight logistics, analyzing performance data, and driving business improvements. The position also requires maintaining exemplary customer service across various sectors, necessitating strong management, communication, and analytical skills.
Responsibilities
– Plan, lead, and oversee the Transportation Planner II team.
– Collaborate with the Logistics team on projects that fulfill divisional objectives, elevate customer service, and meet budgetary constraints.
– Monitor Key Performance Indicators to assess alignment with scorecards, goals, and expectations.
– Engage effectively with Third Party Providers, Quality Assurance, Customer Service Operations, Global Purchasing, Finance, Customer DC Operations, Carrier Operations, Sales Management, and Division Logistics teams.
– Uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct while adhering to all company policies and procedures.
– Supervise the daily functions of Transportation Planners.
– Operate Transportation Management Systems.
– Develop and implement transportation operational and procurement strategies that support cost efficiency while meeting customer service expectations.
– Ensure compliance with routing guides and manage Spot Market shipments to sustain a favorable cost profile.
– Approve accessorial charge requests.
– Collaborate with internal teams and Third Party Carriers/Warehousing to foster continuous improvement.
– Maintain accurate records in the transportation event log related to product quality and carrier incidents.
– Coordinate and lead carrier operational meetings for continuous improvement.
– Update and maintain documentation of Transportation Procedures in the Global Logistics Procedure Database.
– Assist the department with projects and assignments to achieve divisional goals.
– Provide weekend and night coverage for issue resolution as necessary.
Education and Experience
Required
– Bachelor’s degree in Logistics or a related field such as Business Management.
– 3-4 years of experience in Transportation or Logistics management.
Preferred
– Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills.
– Familiarity with SAP and Microsoft Transportation Management Systems.
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
– Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and conditional statements.
– Ability to manage and organize large datasets.
