As a Universal Grinder, you will set up and operate internal and external universal and surface grinding equipment, both conventional and CNC, to achieve precise finish dimensions on a variety of complex production and tooling parts. You may receive assistance from other operators regarding proper operational procedures. Additionally, you will be responsible for performing housekeeping and other job-related duties as assigned by the foreman.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate universal and surface grinders to perform complex, close-tolerance, semi-finish, and finish grinding operations on diverse production hardware, tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, forming-die parts, and other necessary components.
  • Select, install, and dress grinding wheels, completing all setup changes with minimal blueprints, leveraging mathematical calculations where necessary. Work with irregular shapes may require the use of specialized or improvised work-holding devices and precise measuring tools to ensure correct alignment and concentricity.
  • Develop NC programs during setup, utilizing G and M codes.
  • Employ expert knowledge of precision grinding to grind internal, external, straight form, and tapered surfaces to extremely close tolerances and high-quality finishes.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints to ascertain locations, dimensions, and finishing requirements.
  • Maintain a high level of attentiveness to ensure proper setup, dressing of wheels, and execution of work details according to tool design specifications.
  • Utilize various precision measuring devices, including comparators and electronic gauges, for quality inspection of work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the setup and operation of manual and CNC internal/external universal grinders, or completion of an accredited training program will be considered.
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent is required.
  • The ability to demonstrate proficiency in the relevant skills on a test piece is necessary, if applicable.
  • Demonstrated CNC control abilities, including the ability to edit speeds, feeds, tool offsets, and fixture offsets.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting complex blueprints, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Familiarity with various measuring instruments, including dial bore gauges, indicator snap gauges, verniers, and .0001 micrometers.
  • Strong skills to maintain accurate documentation.
  • Ability to develop NC programs during setup using "G" and "M" codes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of multi-axis grinding contouring, as well as grinding wheel dressing and grit/size selection to ensure adherence to tight tolerances as specified in blueprints.
  • Availability and willingness to work any shift (2nd shift: 3 PM – 11 PM, 3rd shift: 11 PM – 7 AM).

The starting rate for this position in Ohio is $41.46 per hour. The total compensation package will include comprehensive medical, retirement, and other benefits. Details regarding participation in these benefits will be provided upon a job offer and are subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
