Job description:

The Vision and Hearing Technician is tasked with planning and implementing vision and hearing screenings for children at Detroit Head Start programs, daycares, schools, and community organizations. This role involves referring individuals with failed test results for follow-up care, attending state-mandated meetings and training sessions, and delivering group presentations on screening programs. The technician ensures the accuracy of screenings, maintains comprehensive records, and collaborates with schools, families, and healthcare professionals to provide thorough care for children enrolled in the program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Successfully complete MDHHS Vision and Hearing training requirements.
  • Conduct a specified number of comprehensive vision and hearing screenings at preschools, daycares, and schools.
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate screening services with educational staff.
  • Appropriately refer individuals who do not pass their screenings.
  • Submit accurate screening documentation, including name lists, summaries, audiograms, and referral cards.
  • Ensure timely submission of paperwork and assignments.
  • Maintain proper care of office and screening equipment.
  • Collect and input health insurance information.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of hearing, speech, and language development.
  • Work effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Operate a personal computer and standard office equipment competently.
  • Complete emergency preparedness training (including FEMA IS Courses 100, 200, 700, and 800) within 90 days of hire.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness exercises as required.
  • Respond during public health emergency events when necessary.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, education, psychology, guidance and counseling, or a related field. A minimum of one year of recent supervisory experience, preferably in social, economic, or community development programs. Additionally, three years of experience in casework, group work, individual and group counseling, social research, or community/public relations. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
