Job description:

Plays a vital role in supporting youth and young adults (YYAs) who are experiencing homelessness by creating a safe, stable, and supportive living environment. Embracing the Housing First for Youth approach, this position emphasizes building positive relationships with clients, promoting the development of life skills, and ensuring compliance with program guidelines. As part of a collaborative team, the Residential Specialist works closely with Case Managers and other staff to deliver comprehensive support that enhances the overall well-being and long-term stability of YYAs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Client Support & Housing Stability

  • Employ Housing First for Youth principles to offer individualized, youth-centered support, with a focus on securing stable housing without preconditions.
  • Cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and trauma-informed residential environment that honors the autonomy and dignity of all YYAs.
  • Assist YYAs in managing daily living activities while reinforcing positive habits in personal hygiene, housekeeping, time management, and meal preparation.
  • Facilitate engagement in enrichment activities, and support the development of social skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Provide guidance on coping strategies, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation through a strength-based approach.

Collaboration and Team Coordination

  • Work in close collaboration with case managers and team members to ensure seamless service coordination aligned with each client’s individualized goals.
  • Document and communicate client updates, progress, and concerns via designated channels, ensuring timely follow-up and interventions as necessary.
  • Participate in shift handovers, sharing insights and observations to inform case planning and enhance service delivery.
  • Collaborate with the security team to uphold safety protocols, ensuring a secure and stable residential environment for all YYAs.

Residential Operations and Program Support

  • Monitor and maintain communal areas, ensuring they are clean, organized, and conducive to a positive living experience.
  • Ensure adherence to program expectations, addressing concerns with a strengths-based, youth-centered perspective.
  • Assist in preparing apartments for resident move-ins and move-outs, ensuring units are safe, clean, and welcoming.
  • Support YYAs in tracking their weekly schedules, fostering accountability for commitments to work, school, and program participation.
  • Conduct rounds and apartment inspections, reinforcing program guidelines while promoting a supportive and non-punitive atmosphere.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Ensure all interactions and services are consistent with trauma-informed care, harm reduction principles, and the Housing First for Youth model.
  • Maintain a minimum of 5 hours of monthly productivity in accordance with standards set by Senior Management through the provision of individual and group services, as appropriate.
  • Keep accurate client records in compliance with agency procedures and funder requirements, ensuring all documentation is completed within 72 hours as mandated by the agency.

Daybreak is committed to ensuring that the facility meets all licensing requirements and that all employees are fit for duty. Following a conditional offer of employment, all prospective employees will be required to sign a background check release form and successfully complete pre-employment testing before a start date is established.

Background Check
In accordance with State of Ohio law, Daybreak will conduct a criminal background check, which includes fingerprinting, for eligible applicants. Additionally, the following background checks will be performed:

  • Federal Exclusion Databases, including:
    • National Sex Offender Registry
    • Office of Inspector General (OIG)
    • Nurse Aide Registry
    • System for Award Management (SAM)
    • Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD)
    • Motor Vehicle Report

Pre-employment Testing
Pre-employment tests, conducted at Daybreak’s expense, will include:

  • A tuberculin skin test or chest x-ray by a physician of Daybreak’s choosing.
  • A urine drug screening by a testing facility selected by Daybreak.

If the results of the background or pre-employment checks indicate that the applicant does not meet the employment requirements, Daybreak reserves the right to withdraw the offer of employment or postpone hiring until the concerning condition is resolved. Should any criminal offense be revealed that disqualifies the prospective employee, the conditional offer will be immediately rescinded, unless the charge was a minor misdemeanor involving neither violence nor a sexual offense and is at least five years old. Adherence to SB 38 (child-serving agency) is mandatory, as any disqualifying events listed on the Ohio Revised Code Disqualifier sheet may preclude employment with Daybreak.
