Position Overview
The Managing Director, Development (MDD) is responsible for establishing multi-year contributions, identifying new funding sources, and managing existing donor relationships. The MDD will lead a team dedicated to achieving the site’s fundraising goals, which encompass major gift solicitation, grant writing, event planning, and managing external communications and marketing efforts. Additionally, the MDD will be a key member of the site leadership team, driving and supporting site-wide initiatives and projects.
Job Description
Fundraising Strategic Plan
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board to develop and implement a strategic, diversified fundraising plan that addresses current goals and anticipates future needs and growth objectives.
- Oversee strategies for identifying and securing partnerships with corporations and foundations that align with their marketing and business objectives, as well as philanthropic and community engagement goals.
- Develop strategies to attract new individual supporters, maximize existing relationships, increase multi-year commitments, and maintain or enhance current contributions.
- Work closely with the Executive Team to assess current and future funding requirements and position the organization for both short- and long-term success.
- Collaborate with headquarters to cultivate regional and national sponsorships.
- Identify team training needs and promote the utilization of available systems, structures, and capabilities to achieve strategic goals.
- Submit a budget that allocates the necessary resources to meet objectives.
Leader of Development Team
- Manage, coach, and lead the development team to achieve their individual targets, providing support as needed.
- Train and mentor other staff to bolster fundraising efforts and encourage professional development opportunities through local organizations and the national City Year network.
- Foster cross-team collaboration to accomplish shared goals.
Board Management
- Support the Executive Director in engaging and managing the City Year Detroit Board.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for board member needs.
- Manage logistics for Board meetings and follow-up actions.
- Lead the Associate Board in supporting AmeriCorps members through professional development, mentorship, and in-kind contributions.
Red Jacket Society
- Prepare reports related to the Red Jacket Society (RJS).
- Draft correspondence for RJS members.
- Plan and execute cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation events for RJS.
- Oversee the ordering and distribution of red jackets.
- Participate in regular conference calls with the RJS team at headquarters.
- Collaborate with the Board’s Development Subcommittee to identify new prospective RJS members.

Compensation and Benefits
